Deep Conditioning Basics…And A Challenge!!

Condition Hair

Condition Hair

Hi all!

Ok..I’ve sung the deep conditioning song many times and I am sure all of you by now know the benefits of a deep condition..a good one I might add. It helps restore the hair to optimal levels and it provides for beautiful healthy hair. Just in-case you are new to deep conditioning, and or you’ve forgotten the rules/tips here’s a quick run down:

1. Mix and match to your desire. You alone know your hair best. If you happen to like a few conditioners, now is you chance to blend them together. Of-course you can always make your own conditioner, like the avacado blend posted a few days ago.

2. Saturate the hair thoroughly. The worst thing to do, is deep condition one area of your hair more so than another. While one area thrives, the other suffers from lack of attention.

3. Cover it with a plastic cap or a plastic bag. Let’s face it, you need to trap the moisture in there. Leaving it uncovered allows it to dry up, what good is that?

4. Use Heat! Yes, yes..Heat is your friend when it comes to deep conditioning. Now you only need heat for the first 20mins. This allows for the cuticles of your hair to be opened and receptive to the conditioner you have placed on your hair. So while you have the conditioner in and the plastic cap/bag on, sit under a conditioning cap. You could find many great choices at Sally’s and any Beauty Supply Stores for that matter.
By the way, you can use the heated towel method as well. Instead of the conditioning cap, get a towel you’ve made wet by hot water, that was then placed in the microwave for 1-2 mins. Wrap the heated towel over the plastic bag on your head and then cover that with another plastic bag/cap.

5. After the heat let it marinate…this can be for as long as up to 45 mins if you choose. Point is, give the now warm hair a chance to cool off before you rinse, this also allows the conditioner’s benefits to sit on the hair shaft and be sealed in prior to rinsing.

6. Cold water rinses! But cold is..well COLD!! bbbBRBRBR…Lol..yes yes..Reason for the cold water is to close the cuticle. You’ve just opened it up, now you need to close it so the shaft can be smooth. Think about it, heat opens..then well cold closes.

7. After every good deep conditioning, you need to moisturize well, and also protective styling is a great option. Baby those ends and replenish your hair with moisture.

That’s it..7 Simple steps for you to get optimal results from deep conditioning. It’s UTLC for your hair! (ultimate tender loving care, incase you were wondering ^_^ )

NOW FOR THE CHALLENGE!!!

Okay..calling all conditioning slackers, no shows and wanna-be-betters..Lol..I know I am at some point a case of all of those. Now my challenge to us wanting to reap the benefits of well conditioned hair (growth, moisture, healthy, shiny, bouncy, beautiful, etc) I propose a challenge to us:

Every week from now (May 13, 2009) to Dec 31, 2009 we will deep condition our hair atleast once (1 time) per week!! No excuses. Advised to follow the steps mentioned above.

Hope to see you join me in the challenge.

Stay blessed.

I’m in. I’m going to start a little later because I’m going for a deep cleaning and lock treatment in week. After that, I’ll get to conditioning. My hair won’t know what hit it. This is great. Thanks Quel for sharing introducing me to Afroniquely You.

I started the challenge a week after you started it. I’ve been doing it and I’m not sure if I see any difference in my hair… except after I wash the condish out. I think my issue is what to put in it after I wash it out. I’ve been using curls but I want to go more natural. Perhaps, start making my own product like I have done with my deep condish.

I’ve put avocado, honey, coconut oil and olive oil together. IT gives my hair more curl definition but then once I wash it out… I lose all that and it just frizzes up again. But i’m going to continue with the challenge and keep experimenting with product.

I have two question that I need help with.
My 13 year old has been losing her hair and I have been trying the home made remedy before but I guess I have not been consistent. I will definitely take up the weekly challenge.
My locks which I have bee growing for 3 years have suddenly refused to grow. What can I do to improve growth and sheen. The hair usually looks dry even after it is oiled.

  • afroqueenshae

Hey AFox..yes you can. but be mindful that not all types of conditioners should be left in. If you want to leave it in over night, I suggest applying the conditioner in right before bed, and washing it out first thing in the morning. HTH.
