Understand Your Curl

It is so important to understand your curl and to learn to live and deal with it. Too often I see a lot of us naturals, who are un-happy, or unsatisfied with our curls. I have 4a-4b hair, and while it may not be the popular hair choice, I wouldn’t change it for the world! Now don’t get me wrong, their are days when I wish my hair could just do what I want it to. But alas, you must listen to your hair.

In-case you’ve missed what my hair looks like from before, here are some quick stats. I have shoulder length thick black 4a/b hair. It coils and curls when it pleases. I at first, when I just went back to being natural, I was obsessed with curl definition, in all honesty it was because I didn’t want to accept having the kinkiest hair. I wanted those 3a-3b curls. Thing is, I have a patch of 3b hair, but only one patch, someone, because at that time, I really didn’t truly love and embrace all natural textures, I poisoned my mind into wanting another curl, because only that curl is acceptable. Well later on in my journey, i realized, my 4a-4b hair has curls and coils, it’s just that I wasn’t treating them how they wanted to be treated. I have now learned and accepted, all hair textures are acceptable and gorgeous. I look at my hair and wonder how I could ever say I didn’t like my big large afro? What was I thinking?

Well fast forward to present day. I still like getting my curls to really pop every now and again, but as my hair grows, it gets a lot thicker! And with thick long hair, that means, more products to get good results.

Well, today I tried the conditioner only method. I have tried it before, but with a little alterations, my roots were plaited. What I have noticed today was that, I used a lot of conditioner, and my hair though defined, wasn’t as defined as I would have liked, say as much as if I had used Kinky Curly Curling Custard. So why not use the KCCC? Well that in my hair takes too long to dry, plus I am a student, who does not have money to buy KCCC every 2 weeks! (My hair would drink that product up!).

So maybe no more CO method for me. Maybe now I’ll have to do twist outs/braid outs/curly fro techniques only to achieve a similar style. or maybe I still need to hunt for a product that will give me what I want. Either way, this illustrates how important it is to understand your curl. Once you listen to your hair, it will tell you what it likes and dislikes.

I’ll be trying out a few “curl defining” products soon, so I will write my opinion on each when I do use them. Also, I wanted to add, I will be revisiting Sizta2Sizta hair care line and also begin to reuse Blended Beauty Happy Nappy Styles. And possibly try out Miss Jessie’s for real this time!
