Q&A Sessions #3 Reversion

A reader asked this question in hopes of just seeing everyone’s views, and I thought the question was pretty interesting as well, so I’m making another Q and A session:

The Question:

What is everyone’s experience with “reverting” back to the curlies after a press? Does the curl return 100%? Does it seem to take a few weeks? Do you suffer from permanent heat damage in certain areas? I’d love to hear thoughts!

My reply:

When I press my hair/flat iron my hair, it reverts 100%. Before the press gallops of heat protectant go on to make sure it’s protecting my curls. And when I do wet it/for me I put conditioner on it to get a two in one (conditioning while reverting) and that works for me. Then by the time I go to really wash the conditoner out, my curls are all back. If there is any burn’t areas that means the hair wasn’t protected and is truly damaged.

I’d love to see what everyone else out there thinks and what you ladies do once you’ve pressed your hair.

Stay Blessed and Afroniquely You!

My hair is naturally kinky. I’ve been getting it pressed every two weeks for the last to months. My ends are now straight even after shampoo and contioning. I can no longer style my hair with twist or afro. What can I do to revert my ends?

Sadly there is nothing you can do but to cut it. Your ends are now permanently straight..Sorry this happened to you. :(

My hair is naturally pretty curly (pencil to dime sized spirals) and i blow-dry and flat-iron it semi regularly. I've never had a problem w my curls not springing back 100% after a good shampoo or two, however, I never use excessive heat. A girlfriend and I went natural at the same time and while I cut all my relaxer off, she pressed hers and her ends remained straight and she eventually just had to cut that hair off just like i did! . . . I'm not sure of the texture of your hair, but (I am also a hairsylist) there are several ceramic and porcelain flat irons that offer more protection agains raw heat (hot combs, metal plated flat and curling irons). When I flat iron my hair i do it ONCE and it stays like that for however long I keep it straight (some times longer than I like to admit!) lol. But just watch your heat! If your texture demands you use a raw heat source, test it. if it's hot enough to discolor tissue paper or a rag, it's too hot for your hair!!! Cool it off a little w a damp rag.

I have been natural for six years and occasionally I hot comb my naturally curly hair. I hot combed and flat ironed my hair for my wedding in August 09 and then I did it again in October. I noticed that after washing my hair quite a few times my bangs would stay straight. It has been 6 months since the last time I straightened my hair and my bangs are still straight…I scrunch the front with gel and pin it back so its less noticeable but I guess that flat iron was really strong. So maybe I will have to cut my bangs which I hate to do since their are chin length:(
