Your Take on the Matter: Fros, a No Go?

So it’s becoming more apparent that afros take on a sort of taboo picture. Very rarely will you find people who openly accept the afro in all its picked out glory. If you wear a fro, they expect it to be curly, or else it’s not acceptable? What’s your take on the matter? Afros, or not?

I was at Disneyland last week and was happy to see two young women with afros, they were not fully picked out but they were not curly either. I think it's up to the individual. It's not my first choice, I prefer braids so I can wear them forever, or if I'm wearing my hair out, I'll wear a twist/braid out. I would probably wear an afro if I did a BC, I like the TWAs.

I love my Afro. For the past couple of months I've been wigging it because my Afro was in that in-between phase; to fall or not to fall (down). Anyway, this week my Afro is back. I wear it pulled back most days at work and to the gym. When the weekend comes around, my Afro is picked up and out, and ready for the day! Either way, I feel my hair is acceptable because I'm comfortable with it. Also, I receive more compliments with my Afro.

I wear my fro how ever it goes. Either curly or in between. Like Edwina said, whatever, I'm confortable in it so, I don't care.

I've found that black people are more “uncomfortable” with my afro than nonblacks. I have had several women, especially at church, say things like “I really like you hair in braids or with weave better than this whole natural thing” or “Are you really never going to get a relaxer again? I could never deal with the kinks..” and I have gotten “I bet your husband doesn't like your afro.” Well, admittedly, it has taken me time to get use to the whole natural look and afro. I have 4a or b (still trying to figure that out) hair so I don't have the “biracial” curly hair that people seem not to mind so much. I've been natural now for almost 2 yrs and I got my hair pressed for the first time. The church ladies raved about it as if somehow I look good now versus being in my natural state. I let them all know that my naturally beautiful hair would be back to its original state as soon as I shampoo it. I'm learning that it's all about what I think and how I feel about my afro that's important.

I wear my full fro to work everyday with no problem. i work for the government and I am 1 of 2 “minorities”. So far so good.

I wear a semi-fro often. I pick it out completely sometimes, and other times it's a result of having 5 big twists from the night before. Either way, I call it a semi-fro because I wear a headband. This is only because I don't think a full afro fits my face. If it weren't for that fact alone, I would rock a full, picked-out fro and be proud. I do think that women who wear a “real” fro get some sideways glances, and maybe even a few remarks, some good, some bad. No one has ever said anything to my face about my semi-fro, but I sometimes wonder if they would say something if it were “real.” Even with the semi, I get some stares, and I hear some giggles on passing, but that's because natural hair is not very popular where I live. I tend to think people think I'm either crazy, a black panther, or just need to “do something with my hair.” The stigma with wearing afros is a little disheartening for naturals, because some of us think we have to be curly or braided or twisted all the time because of how society views us.

When my hair was longer I wore my fro daily as well, and got compliments from all ethnicities. I have a short cut now, but as soon as it grows back, thats my look.

Hi Everyone!! I wear my fro completely BLOWN out!! I work in a business environment that is not used to seeing this. Of course I had to break them in!! My bosses, co-workers, customers, etc… have a lot of questions on a daily basis but I don't mind “schooling” them on the natural hair!

  10. Get Togetha says:

The curly/textured afro is definitely more acceptable to many than the straight up Angela Davis kind. One is a bit modern the other a relic of the past. I own no. I haven't seen a straight up Afro in a long time and if I do it's on some guy who doesn't have a job…LOL…

  11. afroniquely says:

Lol..that is so true..its more so guys who rock it now..But why? lol

  12. afroniquely says:

Wowzers!! I'd totally love to see some pics and kudoos to you for your rocking the fro!!

  13. afroniquely says:

Yes you are so correct. Even the semi-afro gets the dirty eye from time to time. But it makes no sense to me why people can't accept the afro.

All the women in my house go natural! My daughter wears her “picked out” Fro WELL. She just turned 15 but has been wearing it for a couple of years now. I encourage all of my kids to wear their natural hair. My 16 year old wears the huge Puff in the back and my 12 year old goes cornrows, individual braids or twists. They have all done creative variations with their Fros. My hair is curly/wavy so I've done the natural thing for many years but I do straight sometimes. Last year, when my my lil AfroQueen had her hair braided up into a mohawk, (which was fabulous!) she was told at the private school she attends that it had to come down because another parent (non African American) had her preschool son's hair shaved into a mohawk and they gave my kid the credit as their inspiration to do it too. So I had her take it down but I have her still wearing the Afro and won't budge on that one.

Peace. I wear an afro & I've been wearing my TWA(Teeny Weeny Afro) off & on for over two years & I love it! Its not taboo in my world to wear an afro, because it is beautiful & it makes me feel so divine. I keep my TWA fresh by getting a shape-up weekly, so my hair is neat, fresh, & can be professional at my job, but also can be sexy & daring if I go out. It's all about the way a person wears it. But don't get it twisted. Afros are beautiful!

    Amen! Say it again!
